Traffic safety alongside Bergen Light Rail
Show consideration when moving alongside Bergen Light Rail. All pedestrians, cyclists and drivers have a duty to give way to Bergen Light Rail.
The braking distance for an empty Bergen Light Rail carriage travelling at 30 km/h is around 15 metres at full braking force. At 50 km/h, the braking distance will be around 36 metres when applying the hazard brake. With passengers on board, the braking distance is even longer.
Do not stay in the light rail track
Outside the city center, from Nygård to Bergen Airport (line 1), and from the City Station to Fyllingsdalen (line 2), the light rail is considered a suburban railway. It is prohibited to stay in the light rail track in accordance with railway law.
In Bergen city center, on the route Byparken - Nonneseter - Bergen Bus Station - Nygård, the light rail operates like a tram, and road traffic laws apply.
Crossing the light rail track
Information for pedestrians
- Only cross the track at designated locations. Pedestrian crossings over the track are marked in gray.
- You can safely cross the track when the pedestrian light is green.
- If you do not have a green light, you always give way to the light rail. This applies even if the traffic light is not working and at pedestrian crossings without traffic lights.
- Outside the city center, where the light rail follows railway law, entering the track is forbidden for your own safety. Walking/loitering on the tracks may be reported to the police.
- In Bergen city center, where the light rail follows road traffic laws, it is permitted to cross the track outside designated pedestrian crossings. Remember that you always have to give way to the light rail.
Walking/loitering in the tunnels is extremely dangerous! The light rail moves at high speed here.
Information for cyclists or scooter users
- Cross the track only at designated locations. Pedestrian crossings over the light rail track are marked in gray.
- All crossings in the route are marked as red areas in the road.
- When crossing the track, cross at an angle, mostly perpendicular to the track. This avoids getting your wheel stuck in the rail groove. Remember that the rails are slippery.
- Cycling in the light rail track is only allowed in sections where cars and the light rail share the route. However, keep a distance from the rails to prevent falls.
Information for motorists
- Comply with traffic lights when crossing the Bergen Light Rail tracks.
- In places without traffic lights where the road crosses the tracks, or if the traffic lights are out of order, motorists always have a duty to give way to Bergen Light Rail regardless of which side, the right or left, it comes from.
- Do not enter junctions/level crossings that are marked red until you are absolutely certain that you can exit the junction safely. Never stop in the red field in the road where the tracks cross the road.
- All driving in the light rail's route is prohibited unless specifically marked for road vehicles. Driving and parking in the route may be reported to the police.
