1. General rules

These rules apply to passengers on the following of Skyss’s ferry routes in Vestland:

  • Sunnhordland–Austevoll–Bergen
  • Austevoll local passenger ferry
  • Coastal express ferry: Måløy–Smørhamn–Florø
  • Måløy–Gangsøy–Risøy
  • Måløy–Silda
  • Gåsvær–Midtre Solund–Hardbakke
  • Hardbakke–Kolgrov–Utvær
  • Hardbakke–Nåra–Mjømna
  • Nord–Solund
  • Gulen–Ytre Solund
  • Kaupanger quay–Frønningen
  • Vik–Ortnevik
  • Ortnevik–Måren–Nordeide

Fares for ferry routes are split into fare bands. The bands are calculated based on the distance between the embarkation and disembarkation port. The fare charts show the current fares. You can find more information about the ferry routes and about buying tickets on skyss.no.

1.1 Travel documents

Boarding is permitted up to the ticket’s expiry time. For the duration of your journey, you must have valid travel documents on hand to present to staff and the ticket inspector. Travel documents comprise of a ticket valid for the route and time of boarding, and ID validating rights to any discount (ID, student card, concessionary card, etc.). If your journey involves an interchange, and your ticket expires before you board the next service, you must buy a new ticket. All fares and discounts apply regardless of country of residence and nationality.

Your ticket may be in various formats, depending on where you buy it:

  • The Skyss Billett app: The ticket is in the app.
  • The skyss.no website: You can choose between adding the ticket to your Skyss card, printing it or receiving it by e-mail or SMS.
  • On board: You will receive a paper ticket. If you pay by credit/debit card, the card also serves as a ticket. NB: This does not apply to all ferries. See skyss.no for further details.
  • Customer service centre at Bergen bus station: You will receive a paper ticket if you buy a single or 24-hour ticket. To buy a season ticket, you must have a Skyss card.

2. Purchasing tickets

2.1 The Skyss Billett app

Skyss Billett is a mobile app for iOS, Android and Huawei phones. You can use it to buy all kinds of single tickets and season tickets for the whole of the county of Vestland, except combined ferry and bus/coach tickets. You must show a valid ticket/ID when boarding and if requested by the ticket inspector.

Payment methods: Card, Vipps, business account or mobile account.

2.1.1 Mobile account – travel account on your mobile phone
A mobile account is one of the payment methods in the Skyss Billett app. The minimum amount you can add to the mobile account is NOK 200, and the maximum balance is NOK 5,000.

How to top up your mobile account: By card, Vipps or bank transfer. Send an SMS with the word “KID” to 2412 for more information about making a bank transfer.

2.1.2 Business account – your company pays
A business account is one of the payment methods in the Skyss Billett app. This option for companies and organisations allows passengers to have their journeys by public transport paid for by their employer. The company pays a monthly invoice. For more info, see skyss.no.

Payment method: Invoice.

2.2 Website

On the skyss.no website, you can buy all kinds of single and season tickets. To buy a season ticket, you need the Skyss card, which is a travel card for public transport in Vestland. When buying a single or a 24-hour ticket, you can use the Skyss card, print the ticket or get it by e-mail or SMS. You must show valid travel documents upon boarding and during inspection.

Payment methods: Card, Vipps, company account.

2.3 On board

On board our ferries, you can buy all kinds of single and return tickets. You will then receive a paper ticket. If you pay by card, you can also use your card as a ticket. NB: See section 1.1. Staff and the ticket inspector may demand to see a valid ticket/ID at any time during your journey.

Payment methods: Card, cash.

3. Ticket types

3.1 Single ticket, ferry

A single ticket is valid for a single journey on a specific ferry route. Single tickets are available for all fare categories.

The free interchange period will be shown on the ticket and will vary depending on the route.

3.1.1 Return ticket, ferry
On routes above the minimum fare band, you pay half price for the return journey if you buy a return ticket. The return journey must be made within 15 days. Return tickets not used within this deadline are not refundable. Return tickets are available for all fare categories.

3.2 Season ticket

All season tickets are transferable and can be used by several people – but only by one person at a time. The person using the ticket must meet any conditions for discounts based on age or other criteria.

If you are travelling further than the route for which you have a valid season ticket, you must buy a single for the part of the journey not covered by the season ticket.

3.2.1 7-day, 30-day and 180-day tickets, ferry
Season tickets are valid for 7, 30 or 180 days on a specific ferry route. Season tickets are available for the categories adults, children, concessionary and students.

The maximum price of 7-day-, 30-day and 180-day tickets is shown on the prevailing fare chart.

3.2.2 Youth ticket
You can use a 30-day youth ticket from when you turn 16 up to and including the month you turn 21 years of age. Students at upper secondary school who have not turned 16 may also buy a young person’s ticket, but to do so they must present their certificate of admission.

A 30-day young person’s ticket is valid on all Skyss’s bus/coach routes throughout Vestland, as well as on the Bergen Light Rail. The ticket is also valid on the following means of transport:

Other bus services

  • Kolumbus bus services (including night buses) in the municipalities of Haugesund, Karmøy, Bokn, Tysvær and Vindafjord in the county of Rogaland.
  • Trygt heim
  • The airport express bus services in Førde and Sogndal.

Passenger ferries
The young person’s ticket is valid on all boat/ferry routes in Vestland, except the following ones:

  • Osterfjorden ferry service
  • Geitanger–Knappskog
  • Hardanger tourist route (Norheimsund–Herand–Utne–Kinsarvik–Lofthus–Ulvik–Eidfjord)

You can reserve a seat on Norled’s Sogn–Bergen and Nordfjord–Bergen express passenger ferries if you are travelling on a young person’s ticket. See norled.no.

Car ferries
The youth ticket is valid on all car ferries in Vestland.

Express coaches
Youth tickets are valid on the express coaches operated by Vy and NOR-WAY Bussekspress in Vestland, except those in the Bergen area operating on the following routes:

  • Bergen bus station–Knarvik
  • Bergen bus station–Hallhjem
  • Bergen bus station–Trengereid

To be guaranteed a seat on an express coach, you must book in advance. You can do this through the sales channels of Vy or NOR-WAY.

Trains
The young person’s ticket is valid on departures between Bergen and Myrdal (Vossebanen and Arnalokalen).

NB:
You may not use the young person’s ticket on the airport express bus in Bergen, regional/intercity trains between Bergen and Oslo, Flåmsbana or other private bus, coach, boat or ferry routes in Vestland.

You must show the receipt from our website or the Skyss Billett app and valid ID when travelling by express coach, train or express boat.

4. Categories

The fares paid by passengers vary according to their fare category. All passengers travelling on a discounted ticket must present valid documentation of their eligibility for the discount when their ticket is inspected.

4.1 Adult

Adults aged 18 to 66 inclusive pay full fare.

4.2 Child

Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge. Children aged 6 to 17 inclusive pays approximately half fare. On longer routes, a maximum fare has been set for children travelling with a paying adult. The maximum fare per child is shown on the prevailing fare chart and applies to up to four children per adult.

If there is any doubt about a child’s age, staff and the ticket inspector may ask to see valid ID.

4.3 Concession

Concession tickets cost approximately half the price of full fare tickets.

Concessionary discounts apply to

  • people from the age of 67
  • holders of a concessionary card from NAV (people receiving a disability pension pursuant to the National Insurance Act with a degree of disability of at least 50 per cent, and people receiving an equivalent disability pension from another EEA country)
  • disabled refugees receiving supplementary benefit
  • blind or deafblind people with a special ID card
  • spouses or partners (registered pursuant to the Marriage Act) accompanying someone with a concession ticket

If requested by staff or the ticket inspector, you must be able to show that you are entitled to a discount. For passengers from the age of 67, any photo ID showing their age is considered valid.

Concession tickets for passengers under the age of 67 are valid on presentation of a special ID card and photo ID:

  • People receiving a disability pension pursuant to the National Insurance Act with a degree of disability of at least 50 per cent, and people receiving an equivalent disability pension from another EEA country must present their blue concessionary card from NAV and photo ID.
  • Disabled refugees receiving supplementary benefit must present their blue concessionary card from NAV and photo ID.
  • Blind people not in receipt of a disability pension must present a special ID from the Norwegian Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted.
  • Deafblind people entitled to free travel for one companion must present a special ID card (green concessionary card) from the National Resource Centre for the Deafblind and photo ID.

NAV is responsible for producing concessionary cards for people who are entitled to them. Blind people not in receipt of a disability pension and deafblind people receive a special ID card from the Norwegian Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted or from the National Resource Centre for the Deafblind.

4.4 Student

Students pay approximately 40 per cent of the full fare.

The following people are entitled to a student discount:

  • Full-time students/pupils at upper secondary school, vocational school, university college, university or other educational institutions that qualify for support from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. The scheme also covers Norwegian students abroad. The course must last at least three months, and in the case of higher education the course must earn at least 30 ECTS credits per semester. For upper secondary education, the course load must be equivalent to a full year of study.
  • Full-time apprentices and training candidates who meet the requirements in the Education Act, Chapter 4.
  • Adult non-native speakers who are receiving lessons in Norwegian and social studies, and refugees in the Introduction Programme.

If requested by staff or the ticket inspector, you must be able to show that you are in education or training in the current semester. A valid ID must show your name, date of birth, place of study and that it is valid for the current semester. The following forms of ID are valid:

  • student card/ID on your mobile phone confirming that you are a student this semester
  • documentation from your place of study confirming that you are attending this semester, together with a credit/debit card, driving licence, passport or other photo ID

Students who are studying abroad must have an ISIC card. (ANSA cards are not accepted.) International students must have ID and a letter of acceptance from their place of study.

Valid documentation for apprentices/training candidates:

  • personal ID card from the company marked “lærling” (apprentice) or “lærekandidat” (training candidate)
  • copy of their apprenticeship contract (digital or physical)
  • confirmation from the company that you are an apprentice/training candidate, including duration of the apprenticeship contract, name and date of birth

Student ID for the spring semester is valid until August, and student ID for the autumn semester is valid until the end of January. If you are about to finish your studies, the final date for buying a season ticket is 31 July and 31 December. If you are unable to show the ticket inspector valid proof that you are entitled to a student discount, you must pay the prevailing penalty charge.

4.5 Military conscription personnel

Personnel doing their military conscription service pay approximately half the full fare for single tickets above the minimum fare band. The military discount applies for the period of service specified on the ID card issued by the Norwegian Ministry of Defence (FD-ID). The FD-ID card serves as proof of entitlement to the discount. When travelling for military conscription screening, the summons letter serves as proof. The military discount only applies to Norwegian citizens attached to the Norwegian Armed Forces.

4.6 Companions

Companions of people with disabilities who have a companion card and a valid ticket travel free of charge on Skyss public transport. The companion does not need a separate ticket.

5. Discounts

If you are travelling in a group, you can get a discount. You can also get a discount if you combine your boat journey with a bus/coach journey.

5.1 Groups

If you buy single tickets for ten or more people at the same time, you get a 17 per cent group discount on adult tickets. Children, students, concessions and military personnel do not receive a group discount, but they are included when calculating the total number of passengers in the group. Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge and are not included in the total number of passengers.

The group discount cannot be combined with other discounted tickets.

5.2 Combined boat-bus journey

If you travel by bus/coach in combination with a ferry journey, you receive a 50 per cent discount on the bus/coach ticket if you buy a combined ticket. The combined ticket consists of a season ticket for one or more zones by bus/coach, and a season ticket for a specific ferry route that is not included in the zone system. You can buy combined tickets on the Skyss website. This type of ticket cannot be bought through the Skyss Billett app or on board the boat or bus/coach.

6. Luggage etc.

6.1 Accompanied luggage that is carried at no extra cost, space allowing: 

  • hand luggage
  • wheelchairs, prams/pushchairs, bicycles (including e-bikes, e-scooters and scooters)
  • pets
  • skis

6.2 Goods transport

On some ferry routes, it is possible to send unaccompanied goods. Contact the operator of the route in question to find out about prices and other information.

7. Refunds

Single and return tickets are not refundable. 7-day, 30-day and 180-day tickets and young person’s tickets are refundable. Contact the Skyss customer service centre to calculate any residual value and to have it transferred to your bank account if applicable.

8. School transport ticket

The school transport ticket is personal and can only be used by students who have been granted free school transport. With a school transport ticket, you can travel twice per school day: once from your home to the school and once from the school to your home. If you will be travelling more often than this, or to and from other locations, you must buy a separate ticket.

Students can choose whether they want to have the school transport ticket in the Skyss Billett app or on a Skyss school card.

School transport tickets for primary and lower secondary school are valid on school days from 06.00 until 19.00, while tickets for upper secondary school are valid from 06.00 until 22.00. Tickets are valid for the period for which the student has been granted free school transport and are only valid on school days. In other words, they cannot be used on non-school days, such as weekends, planning days and school holidays.

If you have lost or forgotten your school transport ticket, you must buy a ticket and pay for the journey to or from school yourself. Schools are responsible for distributing the physical school cards, so you must contact your school if you need a replacement card.
